i WAS wondering...A curious look at Women's Adventures in Science
This site, a project of the National Academy of Sciences, provides a fun and interactive way for students to learn about women scientists, their areas of work, and the process of scientific investigation. Showcasing the accomplishments of ten contemporary women in science, this site draws from and accompanies a 10 volume series, Women’s Adventures in Science, whose areas of expertise range from robotics to space exploration to genetics to social science. Each woman has a section of the site devoted to her life and work, with information presented in the form of scrapbooks and comics. The site is easily navigated, with attractive graphics, an animated guide, and features such as video clips and games. Most of the segments are accompanied by a science lab, which includes instructions for students, lab journals, and data collection sheets where needed. These labs could be done independently by students at home or could be used in the classroom as assignments. They offer ways to learn about interesting topics such as animal behavior, collecting data from surveys, testing materials for certain properties, and more. Mainly though, the labs help students develop an understanding of how to conduct experiments and pursue scientific questions. There is a section for parents and educators providing general information about using the site and guides on how to use the science labs in particular.
