National Museum of African American History and Culture
The Museum on the Web is the online experience of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture. The physical museum will open in October 2008, but the website is a fully virtual precursor. This is the first time a major museum is opening its doors on the Web prior to its physical existence.
The centerpiece of the NMAAHC Museum on the Web are the collected reminiscences of ordinary Americans. These stories, called “memories” are collected as text, images, and audio uploads in the virtual Memory Book where website visitors are encouraged to submit their own histories and ideas. In addition, the site contains exhibitions and programs such as photographic portraits and biographies from the Let Your Motto Be Resistance traveling exhibit and the Save Our African American Treasures program.
In the For Educators section, the site provides object based learning lessons, meant to encourage higher order thinking skills from Bloom’s Taxonomy. Currently, there are lesson plans for grades K-6. The site also includes a section For Parents, with family activity downloads. Other interesting resources are located in the For Students section, including a Children’s Literature List and information on museum careers.
