The film Sentenced Home puts a human face on controversial immigration policy, following three young Cambodian Americans through the deportation process. Caught between their tragic pasts and an uncertain future, each young man confronts a legal system that offers no second chances. This companion site for the film provides a number of resources for learning and teaching about refugees and other immigration issues. On the main page of the site for educators, you will find four video modules to use with the educator and discussion guides. The Educator Guide contains forty-one pages of information including five lesson plans for grades 9-12, with correlations to national standards, extension ideas, student and teacher handouts, and ideas for further resources. The lessons address the topics of refugee issues, the legal system regarding immigrants, the history of immigration in the US, current immigration and reform issues, and media literacy. At the companion site you will find background information on the film itself, information about the US immigration policy, and further resources for study.
When navigating the site, avoid using the tabs in the top bar of the page, as they will take you back to the Independent Lens home. Use the links within the main body of the page.
