A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
In this lesson from ReadWriteThink, students listen to a book read aloud by the teacher or read it silently by themselves. After reading, students answer an open-ended question about an issue that could have multiple perspectives. Students take positions, and then identify reasons to support their positions. Then, they evaluate the reasons and draw conclusions for themselves.
This lesson may be followed by additional whole-class discussion sessions that place emphasis on dialogue, eventually transferring more and more responsibility to the students for their learning.
