This ReadWriteThink lesson offers ideas for using Venn diagrams in the primary classroom. Choose among these ideas for using hula hoops and real objects to introduce the Venn diagram to young children as they sort, compare and contrast, and organize information in the content areas of art, math, social studies, science, and literature. English Language Arts (2004)

Grade 1

  • Goal 4: The learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual texts.
    • Objective 4.04: Extend skills in using oral and written language:
      • clarifying purposes for engaging in communication.
      • using clear and precise language to paraphrase messages.
      • engaging in more extended oral discussions.

Grade 2

Mathematics (2004)

Grade 1

  • Goal 5: Algebra - The learner will demonstrate an understanding of classification and patterning.
    • Objective 5.01: Sort and classify objects by two attributes.
    • Objective 5.02: Use Venn diagrams to illustrate similarities and differences in two sets.

Grade 2

  • Goal 4: Data Analysis and Probability - The learner will understand and use data and simple probability concepts.
    • Objective 4.01: Collect, organize, describe and display data using Venn diagrams (three sets) and pictographs where symbols represent multiple units (2's, 5's, 10's).

Kindergarten

  • Goal 5: Algebra - The learner will model simple patterns and sort objects.
