Exploring Linear Data
http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L298
A lesson plan for grades 7–12 Mathematics
In this lesson from Illuminations, students model linear data in a variety of settings. Students can work alone or in small groups to construct scatterplots, interpret data points and trends, and investigate the notion of line of best fit. Pages for four activities are provided.
This lesson would be great for students who have had some introduction to lines of best fit, or it could be incorporated as part of a first lesson about lines of best fit. The activities could be used as homework, classwork, or as assessments.

Mathematics (2004)
Grade 7
- Goal 5: Algebra - The learner will demonstrate an understanding of linear relations and fundamental algebraic concepts.
- Objective 5.01: Identify, analyze, and create linear relations, sequences, and functions using symbols, graphs, tables, diagrams, and written descriptions.
Grade 8
- Goal 4: Data Analysis and Probability - The learner will understand and use graphs and data analysis.
- Objective 4.02: Approximate a line of best fit for a given scatterplot; explain the meaning of the line as it relates to the problem and make predictions.
