A lesson plan for grades 1–4 Music Education and Social Studies
In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students create a song that relates to a specific geographic area of the United States. This process helps them come to a better understanding of how music reflects traditions in various cultures, and how geography affects both culture and music.

Music Education (2001)
Grade 1
- Goal 4: The learner will compose and arrange music within specified guidelines.
- Objective 4.01: Select and create music to accompany readings or dramatizations.
- Objective 4.02: Compose a simple melody using at least three pitches.
- Objective 4.03: Compose a simple rhythmic pattern using quarter and eighth note and quarter rest durations.
Grade 2
