Written in Bone - The Secret in the Cellar
http://anthropology.si.edu/writteninbone/comic/
Students love graphic novels and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural Science uses their Webcomics to teach students about a real-life “forensic mystery from colonial America.” Step into the shoes of forensic scientists and examine a 17th Century skeleton and artifacts from that period.
As students read through the story, they can click on links at the bottom of the comic frame for more information about the true story of the Lost Towns Project. There are maps, definitions of archaeology terms, articles, and activities to help students uncover the mystery “written in bone.”
The entire Webcomic and related activities and articles can be downloaded in PDF format. See the Print and Help area of the site.
Teachers, please take the survey at the end of the Webcomic. This will help the Museum assess how well this format works in teaching students about natural history.
