Comparing properties of the mean and the median through the use of technology

A lesson plan for grade 7 Mathematics
Using interactive software, students can compare and contrast properties of measures of central tendency, specifically the influence of changes in data values on the mean and median. As students change the data values, the interactive figure immediately displays the mean and median of the new data set.
E-Math Investigations are selected e-examples from the electronic version of the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (PSSM). The e-examples are part of the electronic version of the PSSM document. Given their interactive nature and focused discussion tied to the PSSM document, the e-examples are natural companions to the i-Math investigations.

Grade 7
- Goal 4: Data Analysis and Probability - The learner will understand and use graphs and data analysis.
- Objective 4.02: Calculate, use, and interpret the mean, median, mode, range, frequency distribution, and inter-quartile range for a set of data.
- Objective 4.03: Describe how the mean, median, mode, range, frequency distribution, and inter-quartile range of a set of data affect its graph.
- Objective 4.04: Identify outliers and determine their effect on the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data.
