Traveling Along: Measuring and Mapping -- Looking Back and Moving Forward
http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L153
A lesson plan for grades K–2 Mathematics and Social Studies
This lesson is one of an 8-part unit from Illuminations titled “Traveling Along: Measuring and Mapping.” In this lesson students are provided with non-standard measuring tools such as paper clips, pencils, and Tangrams and are instructed to create and label a treasure map that leads to a special play area, a hidden treasure, or a favorite toy.

Mathematics (2004)
Grade 1
- Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will use non-standard units of measure and tell time.
- Objective 2.01: For given objects:
- Select an attribute (length, capacity, mass) to measure (use non-standard units).
- Develop strategies to estimate size.
- Compare, using appropriate language, with respect to the attribute selected.
- Objective 2.01: For given objects:
- Goal 3: Geometry - The learner will identify, describe, draw, and build basic geometric figures.
- Objective 3.03: Compare and contrast geometric figures.
- Objective 3.04: Solve problems involving spatial visualization.
Grade 2
- Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will recognize and use standard units of metric and customary measurement.
- Objective 2.01: Estimate and measure using appropriate units.
- Length (meters, centimeters, feet, inches, yards).
- Temperature (Fahrenheit).
- Objective 2.01: Estimate and measure using appropriate units.
- Goal 3: Geometry - The learner will perform simple transformations.
- Objective 3.01: Combine simple figures to create a given shape.
Kindergarten
- Goal 2: Measurement - The learner will explore concepts of measurement.
- Objective 2.01: Compare attributes of two objects using appropriate vocabulary (color, weight, height, width, length, texture).
- Goal 3: Geometry - The learner will explore the concepts of geometry.
- Objective 3.02: Compare geometric shapes (identify likenesses and differences).
- Objective 3.03: Model and use directional and positional vocabulary.
- Objective 3.04: Complete simple spatial visualization tasks and puzzles.
Social Studies (2003)
Grade 1
- Goal 5: The learner will express geographic concepts in real life situations.
- Objective 5.01: Locate and describe familiar places in the home, classroom, and school.
Grade 2
- Goal 5: The learner will understand the relationship between people and geography in various communities.
- Objective 5.05: Interpret maps, charts, and pictures of locations.
Kindergarten
- Goal 5: The learner will express basic geographic concepts in real life situations.
- Objective 5.02: Create and interpret simple maps, models, and drawings of the home, school, and other environments.
