A lesson plan for grades 5 and 7 Science
This lesson from Science NetLinks is the first of a two-part series on the science of hurricanes and the kinds of technology being used to identify and track them. Students examine different scientific aspects of hurricanes, all in an effort to begin to understand the nature of motion-particularly how changes in speed or direction of motion are caused by forces.

Grade 5
- Goal 3: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of weather and climate.
- Objective 3.06: Discuss and determine the influence of geography on weather and climate:
- Mountains.
- Sea breezes.
- Water bodies.
- Objective 3.06: Discuss and determine the influence of geography on weather and climate:
- Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technologies to build an understanding of forces and motion in technological designs.
- Objective 4.01: Determine the motion of an object by following and measuring its position over time.
- Objective 4.02: Evaluate how pushing or pulling forces can change the position and motion of an object.
- Objective 4.04: Determine that an unbalanced force is needed to move an object or change its direction.
Grade 7
- Goal 3: The learner will conduct investigations and utilize appropriate technologies and information systems to build an understanding of the atmosphere.
- Objective 3.05: Examine evidence that atmospheric properties can be studied to predict atmospheric conditions and weather hazards:
- Humidity.
- Temperature.
- Wind speed and direction.
- Air pressure.
- Precipitation.
- Tornados.
- Hurricanes.
- Floods.
- Storms.
