A lesson plan for grades K–1 Science
In this Xpeditions lesson, students learn about some people who think the ocean is so important that they have devoted their lives to studying it. by Using information gathered by marine biologists, students explore a specific type of fish and compare it to other fish. After brainstorming about ocean life forms, students watch a brief interview with Tierney Thys, a marine biologist. The teacher engages students in discussion about what they watched in the video. Then, students visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium website and explore the webcam and other online exhibits in order to determine what types of tasks might be done on a daily basis at an aquarium. Finally, in small groups, students use what they have learned about marine biology to create murals depicting a sea-life theme park with educational exhibits, live displays of sea animals, and other elements they’ve learned about in this lesson. Xpeditions provides suggestions for extension activities as well as links to the Australian Museum’s Fish Site, MARE’s Build a Fish interactive game, the Fish Memory Game, and several other educational web resources.
