The purpose of this lesson is to understand the impact tools (and machines) have on human society both historically and presently. Specifically, to understand how tools make our lives easier. Students will learn about simple machines and discuss how tools function. This lesson provides helpful planning guidelines for teachers, links to web resources that feature simple tools, and links to rubric creation sites.

Science (2005)
Grade 5
- Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technologies to build an understanding of forces and motion in technological designs.
- Objective 4.07: Determine how people use simple machines to solve problems.
Grade 7
- Goal 6: The learner will conduct investigations, use models, simulations, and appropriate technologies and information systems to build an understanding of motion and forces.
- Objective 6.02: Analyze simple machines for mechanical advantage and efficiency.
Kindergarten
- Goal 4: The learner will use appropriate tools and measurements to increase their ability to describe their world.
