In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students learn about the expanding and condensing properties of air masses and the unequal heating of Earth as the force behind the wind.

Students will:

  • lead and follow in a mirroring exercise;
  • demonstrate locomotor and axial movement that uses shaking and sustained energy;
  • create meaning and relationships with body movement, shapes, and placement;
  • relate shaking energy to rising, expanding air, and sustained energy to falling and condensing air;
  • create a movement motif that demonstrates the movement characteristics of air masses and the wind;
  • create variations on a movement motif; and
  • create a sequence of movement that transitions between motif and variations in the ABA choreographic form.

Dance Arts Education (2001)

Grade 1

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Demonstrate and explore the element of space in dance: personal/general, locomotor/non-locomotor movement, axial movement, shape, level, direction, and pathways.
    • Objective 1.04: Demonstrate and explore the element of energy/dynamics in dance.
  • Goal 2: The learner will understand choreographic principles, processes, and structures.
    • Objective 2.04: Improvise and create movement based on own ideas and concepts from other sources.
  • Goal 7: The learner will make connections between dance and other content areas.
    • Objective 7.01: Identify connections between dance and at least two other content areas.

Grade 2

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Demonstrate and identify the element of space in dance: personal/general, locomotor/non-locomotor movement, axial movement, shape, level, direction, and pathways.

Kindergarten

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.

    • Objective 1.04: Demonstrate the element of energy/dynamics in dance through exploration.

Science (2005)

Grade 2

  • Goal 2: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate tools to build an understanding of the changes in weather.
    • Objective 2.01: Investigate and describe how moving air interacts with objects.

Kindergarten

  • Goal 2: The learner will make observations and build an understanding of weather concepts.
    • Objective 2.02: Identify different weather features including:
      • Precipitation.
      • Wind.
      • Temperature.
      • Cloud cover
