Describing data

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
Students create glyphs, which are versatile data representation tools, based on the characteristics of their names. They also enter data into a spreadsheet and sort it in several ways. Reasoning and communication are the Process Standards emphasized in this lesson. Students participate in a drawing activity based on the mathematical qualities of their names and represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs. Then, they compare different representations of the same data and evaluate how well each representation shows important aspects of the data.
