A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
In this lesson, students play a puzzle, “Petals Around the Rose,” involving five dice and a non-standard pattern in order to explore problem-solving skills. Using transparent dice on the overhead projector, the teacher guides students through a game of exploring number patterns. After discovering the rules of the game, students can create their own number pattern games using dice.
Students will:
- Determine a rule for “Petals Around the Rose”.
- Consider various problem-solving strategies.
- Use an organized list to identify patterns.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Representing and analyzing patterns and functions, using words, tables, and graphs.
- Describing, extending, and making generalizations about geometric and numeric patterns.
- Modeling problem situations with objects and using representations such as graphs, tables, and equations to draw conclusions.
