These online inquiry projects help students explore plant science and will help develop research skills, communication skills, technology skills. Each project provides mentoring by scientists who help guide the students through the research. Inquiry units have been “developed and field-tested by teams of plant scientists, science education researchers, and K-12 educators,” and are aligned to national standards.
This free program requires registration approximately one month in advance of the start of a project. Students register two weeks in advance and materials for the project are mailed to the class. This also allows students to get to know the mentoring scientists that will be participating in the project with them. The SIP3 program runs projects in the fall and spring. Current projects include seed germination and growth of seedlings and photosynthesis. New projects are in the development and field-testing stage.
