In this ARTSEDGE lesson, students relate the science concepts of layering, air density, and particles directly to dance concepts such as level and shape.

Students will:

  • relate their own personal body space to the concept of spheres—specifically the atmosphere;
  • identify the three basic levels of space and relate them to the layers of the atmosphere;
  • examine and experience the making of body shapes;
  • use movement and dance as a means of communicating information;
  • identify particles in space and air density; and
  • explore the basic composition structures of motif and variation—rondo and canon.

North Carolina Curriculum Alignment

Dance Arts Education (2001)

Grade 1

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Demonstrate and explore the element of space in dance: personal/general, locomotor/non-locomotor movement, axial movement, shape, level, direction, and pathways.
  • Goal 7: The learner will make connections between dance and other content areas.
    • Objective 7.01: Identify connections between dance and at least two other content areas.

Grade 2

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Demonstrate and identify the element of space in dance: personal/general, locomotor/non-locomotor movement, axial movement, shape, level, direction, and pathways.
  • Goal 7: The learner will make connections between dance and other content areas.
    • Objective 7.01: Explain connections between dance and at least three other content areas.

Grade 3

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Utilize and elaborate on the element of space in dance.
  • Goal 7: The learner will make connections between dance and other content areas.
    • Objective 7.01: Investigate connections between dance and other content areas.

Kindergarten

  • Goal 1: The learner will identify and demonstrate elements and skills in dance.
    • Objective 1.02: Demonstrate the element of space in dance through exploration: personal/general, locomotor/non-locomotor movement, axial movement, shape, level, direction, and pathways.
  • Goal 7: The learner will make connections between dance and other content areas.
    • Objective 7.01: Identify connections between dance and one other content area.

Science (2005)

Grade 2

  • Goal 2: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate tools to build an understanding of the changes in weather.
    • Objective 2.01: Investigate and describe how moving air interacts with objects.

Kindergarten

  • Goal 2: The learner will make observations and build an understanding of weather concepts.
    • Objective 2.02: Identify different weather features including:
      • Precipitation.
      • Wind.
      • Temperature.
      • Cloud cover
