A lesson plan for grades 9–12 Mathematics
Using an interactive computer program, students explore rates of cardiac output, which is the blood flow pumped by the heart. The teacher leads students in a discussion predicting rates of change for several examples based on medical x-rays and fluoroscope movies.
Students will:
- Explore rates of change and accumulation in context.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Understanding the differences among various kinds of studies and which types of inferences can legitimately be drawn from each.
- Understanding the meaning of measurement data and categorical data, of univariate and bivariate data, and of the term variable.
- Knowing the characteristics of well-designed studies, including the role of randomization in surveys and experiments.
