Presenting the plan for a class trip
http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L360
A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
Student groups present the plans for a class trip they developed in the previous lessons. Illuminations provides activity sheets for completing the assignment. In groups, students report data they prepared prior to this lesson. Then the class discusses ways they collected data and decisions they made based on the data. Finally, students create questions for other groups and compare their final plans.
Students will:
- Display the data they collect.
- Formulate questions based upon the data collected by other groups.
- Defend the choice they made.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Designing investigations to address a question and considering how data-collection methods affect the nature of the data set.
- Representing data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Proposing and justifying conclusions and predictions that are based on data and designing studies to further investigate the conclusions or predictions.
