Using technology to analyze and illustrate symbolism in Night.

A lesson plan for grades 9–10 Computer/Technology Skills, English Language Arts, and Information Skills
This lesson integrates technology with the exploration of symbolism in Night, by Elie Wiesel. A series of activities introduces students to modern narratives of hate crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing and prepares students to identify images that represent those events. Based on their understanding of the Holocaust, students use several Internet resources to create visual representations of their responses to symbols in the book. Students then explain their choices through small group discussion, class presentations, and a project report. ReadWriteThink provides links to online workshops and comprehensive materials for educators on teaching about the Holocaust and resources with specific instructions and a rubric for the multi–media project assignment.
