A lesson plan for grade 5 Science
The purpose of this lesson is to explore the everyday implications of system failure and to challenge students to identify the causes of system failure. After completing the two prerequisite lessons about simple machines and systems, in this activity, students explore the possibility of technology failure. Science NetLinks provides student handouts, a link to the student E-Sheet, and very detailed instructions for completing the lesson. The teacher guides students through explicit questions in order to review past experiences with machines and to predict the possible problems they may encounter with the machines in this lesson. Links to helpful web resources about machines are provided by Science NetLinks.

Grade 5
- Goal 4: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technologies to build an understanding of forces and motion in technological designs.
- Objective 4.03: Explain how energy is needed to make machines move.
- Moving air.
- Gravity.
- Objective 4.06: Build and use a model to solve a mechanical design problem.
- Devise a test for the model.
- Evaluate the results of test.
- Objective 4.07: Determine how people use simple machines to solve problems.
- Objective 4.03: Explain how energy is needed to make machines move.
