A lesson plan for grade 7 Social Studies
This Xpeditions lesson is designed to help students understand the enormity of the impact of AIDS on the population of Africa by comparing its effect there with its effect on the population of the world in general, and especially on that of the United States. National Geographic has planned this lesson to assist teachers with the discussion of a sensitive topic and provides helpful web resources that present facts and information in a clear manner.
Students will:
- locate Africa on a map of the world, find various countries on a map of Africa, and locate on a map the part of the United States that lies east of the Mississippi River;
- develop their Internet search skills;
- find information from graphs and charts;
- make quantifiable distinctions about the impact of HIV/AIDS on the populations of Africa and the United States; and
- list several cultural and economic reasons for those differences.
Xpeditions provides detailed instructions, helpful links to web resources and map making tools, and suggestions for assessment and extension activities.
