In this Science Update, students explore why the loss of gray squirrels is affecting forests, especially nut-producing trees. Students evaluate evidence that suggests a shift in the squirrel population could start a chain reaction that could radically alter what’s left of the forest ecosystem. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about the differences between types of squirrels and how they interact with the environment based on their locations. The lesson plan also provides a link to the National Geographic “Expeditions” lesson plan.
