Using picture books to teach characterization in writing workshop

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
The teacher introduces this activity with a mini-lesson on how to revise a piece of writing. Through the careful analysis of character portrayal and the use of online tools such as the ReadWriteThink Story Map, students work in collaborative groups to identify examples from texts that illustrate the development of characters in a story. Students apply what they’ve learned about the author’s craft of characterization by revising a draft of their own work that contains character development. This lesson provides opportunities for self-reflection and teacher assessment of writing improvement.
