A lesson plan for grades 6–8 Mathematics
This lesson is a self discovery approach in understanding the process of plotting points on a coordinate plane, using a program for TI Graphing Calculator. Illuminations provides an activity sheet, game boards, and ordered pair cards to assist in the completion of this lesson. Prior to teaching this lesson, teachers need to download the Points and PTGame programs to the student calculators. After dividing students into groups, the teacher explains coordinate plane, including the location of the x-axis, y-axis, Quadrant I, Quadrant II, Quadrant III and Quadrant IV, and then students work together. After the class discusses their procedure and findings, they play the Line ‘Em Up game using game chips and a coordinate plane.
Students will:
- Plot a point given its coordinates.
- State the coordinates of a given point.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Modeling and solving contextualized problems using various representations, such as graphs, tables, and equations.
- Relating and comparing different forms of representation for a relationship.
