In this Science Update, students explore a project that aims to document the Alaskan Aleut language before it’s lost. Because of the global blending of local cultures, many of the world’s languages are becoming endangered especially as the remaining native speakers are growing older. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about “endangered” languages and the threats posed by global cultures. The lesson plan also provides links to The Foundation of Endangered Languages, the Alaska Native Language Center, and the Iquito Language Documentation Project.
