Active Reading Using The Enormous Watermelon

A lesson plan for grades K–2 English Language Arts
The teacher engages students in an activity to show them how to identify the main character in a text. While reading rebus versions of nursery rhymes online several times, students search for the main character. Following this activity, students identify popular nursery rhyme characters during a shared reading of the big book, The Enormous Watermelon. Teacher also presents students with high-frequency words to identify in the text. Students play a vocabulary matching game to integrate the words into their sight vocabulary.
