Wheelchairs

A lesson plan for grades 6–8 Science
In this Science Update, students explore an organization that counts on some of the world’s poorest countries to develop some of the most innovative new ideas. Students examine how people test wheelchairs over time to find and fix the weak points, and eliminate any unnecessary, costly features. This process of design and testing results in chairs that are more practical, both economically and structurally. The final products are strong enough to stand up to much greater mileage, over much rougher roads. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about how different countries have various designs engineers use for wheelchairs in developing countries. The lesson plan also provides links to the National Society of Professional Engineers website on “A Sightseer’s Guide to Engineering” and other Science NetLinks lessons about invention and innovation.
