A lesson plan for grade 6 Science
In this Science Update, students explore how much food is actually wasted by American people each year. Students hear about a study that measured the quantities and causes of food waste in three different settings: farms, households, and retail/fast food outlets. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion about the main causes of food waste and possible solutions for conserving food in students’ homes, schools, and communities. This lesson provides links to the state of California’s website on “Food Scrap Management” and the Australian Environmental Protection site that includes information about a worm farm project that helps dispose of food waste.
