Skin as an organ

A lesson plan for grade 7 Science
In this Science NetLinks lesson, students examine the science behind skin. Students will examine the skin and how it functions as an organ and as part of a larger body system. In order to do this lesson, students should be aware of other organ systems and have knowledge about the anatomy of the human skin. The activity begins with a game that challenges students to list as many parts of the body as they can in two minutes. Then students use an electronic worksheet and navigate and read through multiple web resources on the body’s systems. Finally, by taking a closer look at the anatomy and function of body systems, students will further their general knowledge of how systems work together to keep the body functioning. Science NetLinks provides student handouts, teacher resources, and discussion questions to assess the degree to which learning goals were met. This lesson plan also recommends extension activities and provides links to the BBC Interactive Body website and the Goose Holler Middle School’s site, “How much skin does a person have?”
