Critical media literacy: Commercial advertising
http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=97
A lesson plan for grades 6–8 English Language Arts and Information Skills
After taking a media literacy quiz, students discuss and evaluate their personal television viewing habits and media usage. Activities for this unit include analyzing television and print advertisements for hidden messages and interpreting the effects of advertising on culture. Through the use of an “Advertisement Dissection and Analysis” graphic organizer, students learn how to identify patterns and themes in television messages and magazine ads. Students evaluate which medium has a more accurate representation of American culture and produce a written response about their research.
