Building classroom community through the exploration of acrostic poetry

A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
In this lesson that builds classroom community, the teacher explains the format of an acrostic poem and models the process of writing this style of poetry in a collaborative class activity. The teacher then engages students in a discussion about how an acrostic can show a classmate respect and express friendship. Then, using multiple Internet resources provided by ReadWriteThink, students work in groups to explore and investigate the characteristics of sample acrostic poems. After brainstorming vocabulary words that describe traits of their partner, students use an interactive online tool to compose and publish their poems. The teacher can use this lesson to assess appropriate vocabulary usage, spelling, and writing skills.
