A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts
This lesson serves as an introduction to the use of literature circles in the elementary classroom. Readwritethink offers a workshop-style lesson and a tool-kit for teachers who are using this collaborative reading strategy for the first time. Students create and answer comprehension questions, discover new vocabulary, and examine elements of literature, while reading self-selected books. Teachers guide students through a step-by-step process by demonstrating the different roles to be completed and by providing students with the opportunity to practice the techniques before they are responsible for completing the tasks on their own. Useful links provide descriptions and specific questions to be answered for each role students will participate in within the group. The lesson also offers suggestions to teacher for how to choose books to be included in literature circles.
