http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=966
A lesson plan for grades 6–8 English Language Arts
In this lesson that focuses on the popular television series, Lizzie McGuire, students develop media literacy skills. After viewing an episode of this teenage comedy, students take part in Media Response Groups where they analyze and interpret messages from the media.
At the conclusion of this lesson, students should be able to:
- Analyze and compare how characters are portrayed in different forms of media
- Demonstrate growth in verbal expression by sharing ideas with groups members and the class
- Demonstrate an understanding of characters, plot and content of the show by participating in Media Response Groups
- Organize story information by constructing a story map
- Synthesize information learned during the lesson by proposing a new television show that provides a more realistic portrayal of teenagers today
This lesson provides several resources for watching and evaluating the show and presents opportunities for students to conduct online research independently using bookmarked sites. Teacher and students collaborate to develop an assessment rubric.
