http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L359
A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
This lesson focuses students’ attention on the variables used in planning trips and captures students’ interest, provides a review of the primary unit objectives, and assesses students’ prior knowledge. Illuminations provides necessary materials for completing this lesson. After the teacher leads students in a discussion about possible trip variables, the class prioritizes the list and researches local tourism maps. Then, in groups, students plan a field trip for the class.
Students will:
- Select appropriate methods and tools for computing with whole numbers from among mental computation, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil.
- Model problem situations using a table.
- Compute elapsed time and distance.
NCTM Standards and Expectations covered in this lesson include:
- Representing data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
