In this Science Update, students explore evidence that suggests male fish protect their eggs. Because female fish lay hundreds and thousands of eggs at a time, which the male doesn’t fertilize until later, most fish don’t parent their offspring. However, there are a few sea creatures, like the male seahorse and the sand goby, that exhibit parenting behavior. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in a discussion of the characteristics of parenting behavior in sea creatures and the differences between the parenting habits of male and female sand gobies. This lesson also provides links to Aquascope and Nova Online’s “Flying Casanovas.”
