In this Science Update, students explore a study that evaluates the difficulty of detecting lies and cons over email. The researchers analyzed transcripts from email conversations and found that people who lie on email use more pronouns and more sensory words. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions that engage students in discussion about possible ways to determine if someone is lying over email and how one might be able to expose the lie. This lesson also contains links to the researcher’s personal web page and a feature by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that covers the evolution of human lying and some technologies for spotting lies.
