A lesson plan for grade 5 Science and Social Studies
In this Science Update, students investigate evidence that suggests early Viking explorers spent time visiting the North American continent long before Christopher Columbus. Researchers found ruins of a farmhouse in Iceland that might reveal that the Vikings settled there after an initial visit to Newfoundland, Canada. Science NetLinks provides a link to the audio file, a written transcript, and questions to engage students in a discussion about the techniques used by scientists to identify this early structure. This lesson also contains links to the Parks Canada’s site devoted to the earliest known European settlement, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History website, and another lesson plan on the Vikings in North America.
