A lesson plan for grades 9–10 English Language Arts
In this lesson that explores the literary elements of character, conflict, resolution, and setting in Romeo and Juliet, students analyze significant passages in a piece of fiction. After brainstorming about the many types of technologies students have at their disposal, they predict the possibilities for Romeo and Juliet’s story had they lived in today’s modern world. Using their knowledge of the characters in the play, students create technology profiles (provided by Readwritethink) for characters and present their information to the class. Then, using online publishing and graphic organizer tools, students work in small groups to re-write important, self-selected scenes from the play to include technological advancements. This lesson provides many web resources and opportunities for self-reflection for students and rubrics for teacher assessment.
