A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
In this lesson, students participate in an activity in which they conduct a survey, analyze and summarize the data they collect, and draw conclusions from their findings. Illuminations provides handouts and instructions for completing this lesson. By evaluating pictures in typical elementary school mathematics textbooks, students conduct a survey of the people representing various age groups. Then, students learn to write number sentences that describe the action in the pictures. Using storybooks, students continue to evaluate pictures based on the skills they developed in the previous lesson. Finally, students create data tables and discuss the results of their work.
Students will:
- Collect data in the form of a survey.
- Analyze data.
- Draw conclusions on the basis of collected data.
- Use data to illustrate the various meanings of addition and subtraction.
- Connect language and symbols in mathematics.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Collect data using observations, surveys, and experiments.
