Planning a trip: Looking back and moving forward
http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L366
A lesson plan for grades 3–5 Mathematics
Students use mathematical knowledge and skills developed in the previous lessons to demonstrate understanding and ability to apply that knowledge in a real-life context. This lesson, which serves as a conclusion to a unit, allows the teacher to evaluate students’ proficiency with methods and tools for computation, estimation, problem posing and solving, collection of data, organization and interpretation of graphical representations, measuring with standard units, and responding to investigations that require the comparison of data sets. Illuminations provides a reflection guide for students, questions for teacher reflection, and instructions for completing the activity.
Students will:
- Select appropriate methods and tools for computing with whole numbers from among mental computation, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil.
- Use charts to draw conclusions.
- Become familiar with standard units.
NCTM Standards and Expectations:
- Represent data using tables and graphs such as line plots, bar graphs, and line graphs.
- Design investigations to address a question and consider how data-collection methods affect the nature of the data set.
- Propose and justify conclusions and predictions that are based on data and design studies to further investigate the conclusions or predictions.
