A lesson plan for grades 3–5 English Language Arts and Social Studies
Students are engaged in a critical thinking activity in this lesson that facilitates the development of knowledge about present-day Native Americans. The teacher engages students in a brainstorming activity where they provide information they think is accurate about Native Americans. Then, in small groups, students compare the information they generated in the brainstorming list with what they learn from children’s nonfiction books, many of which were written by Native Americans. The teacher then engages students in a discussion to determine whether their prior knowledge was affirmed or challenged by the material presented by the books. This lesson provides several critical extension activities as well as links to websites that have been created and maintained by Native Americans.
