Using student-centered comprehension strategies with Elie Wiesel's "Night"

A lesson plan for grade 9 English Language Arts
In this lesson, students independently read Elie Wiesel’s Night and review the themes in small groups using the reciprocal teaching strategies and note-taking format. After an introduction to the reciprocal teaching strategies of predicting, question generating, summarizing, and clarifying, students work together to engage in critical dialogue about the novel. When students have finished the memoir, they lead a whole-class discussion of the segment assigned to them by the teacher. This lesson provides several helpful web resources on the Holocaust and the life of Elie Wiesel as well as discussion questions, graphic organizers and opportunities for self-reflection.
