The Legacy of Genghis Kahn: The Courtly Art and Culture of Western Asia, 1256-1353
Under Genghis Kahn and his sons and grandsons, the Mongol army took over a massive territory that became the world’s largest empire. The result of this conquest was a “cross pollinization” of culture and artistic ideas through the Eurasian region. This site looks at the achievements of that time.
Viewers can see the beautiful objects that have survived from the time of the 13th and 14th centuries. Stone architectural carvings and grave markers, a hand scroll of colored paper and ink, textiles, porcelain, tile work, gold objects, calligraphy, and paintings are explored.
A Teacher’s Guide provides information on four works of art, discussion questions, and an art activity. Also included is a glossary of terms, a genealogy, and a map of the empire. These resources are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader.
