A lesson plan for grade 2 English Language Arts
Applying aspects of the small-group differentiated reading model to a systematic word study of the past tense marker –ed, this lesson helps students identify both base words and suffixes. After introducing students to Henry and Mudge: The First Book, the teacher challenges students to make predictions about the book based on the cover. Before reading, students participate in a picture walk of the first chapter and then begin reading independently. Then, after re-reading the chapter in order to promote reading with accuracy, fluency, and expression, students identify high-frequency words from the chapter and make comparisons with other words that confuse them. Students review suffixes by completing a handout and then hunt for words with suffixes in the text. In pairs, students use the high frequency words and the suffixes they identified in the chapter to create original sentences. Then, after rearranging words in their partner’s sentences, students build new sentences. Students then create a comic strip to predict the events for the rest of the book. Readwritethink suggest extension activities and provides opportunities for student reflection.
