AIDS in Africa I: The scope of the problem
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/lessons/01/g912/africaaidsI.html
A lesson plan for grades 9–12 Dance Arts Education and Social Studies
In this Xpeditions lesson, high school students explore the enormity of the problem of AIDS in Africa by comparing the data on the number of cases of the disease in sub-Saharan Africa to the statistics in the United States. This lesson provides opportunities for individual practice that challenges students to analyze statistics provided by the Washington Post in 2001.
Students will:
- locate Africa on a map of the world and find various countries on a map of Africa;
- develop their Internet search skills;
- develop their math skills by figuring ratios and percentages;
- apply math skills to social problems;
- make quantifiable distinctions about the impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa and the United States; and
- list several social and scientific reasons for the disparity.
Xpeditions provides links to helpful web resources like the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as other lesson plans that extend the skills developed in this lesson. This plan also provides suggestions for assessment and extension activities.
