AIDS in Africa II: More than sympathy
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/lessons/01/g912/africaaidsII.html
A lesson plan for grades 11–12 Social Studies
This Xpeditions lesson is a follow-up to “AIDS in Africa: The scope of the problem”. Students focus on why the disastrous numbers surrounding the AIDS epidemic in Africa exist and explore what is being done, and what can be done, to ease the situation. After the teacher asks students to summarize the situation in Africa from data found in the Lesson I documents, emphasizing the great disparity between the impact of AIDS on African and U.S. populations, students share their emotional and practical reactions to the data they have uncovered. Students read related news articles and discuss their findings in pairs or small groups.
Students will:
- identify cultural factors within Africa that underlie the scope of the AIDS epidemic there;
- discuss worldwide responses to the crisis in Africa;
- list evidence of attitudes and excuses in the world that explain these responses; and
- determine what could be done within Africa and in the outside world to ease the AIDS crisis in Africa.
Xpeditions provides links to news articles and data published by the World Health Organization, as well as detailed instructions and suggestions for assessment and extension activities.
