http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/lessons/14/g35/dawnducks.html
A lesson plan for grade 5 Science
In this Xpeditions lesson, students explore the causes and effects of events such as oil spills and contaminations and experience first-hand the feel of oil spills, determine an environmental problem that affects their community, and develop an “action plan” to minimize the risk to one form of wildlife. Activities in this lesson engage students in collaborative group work, data collection, online learning, and whole class discussion.
Learning Objectives:
- determine the cause of events leading to animal rescues;
- describe how birds are affected by oil spills;
- identify methods to minimize the environmental impact on animal habitats; and
- develop a plan to address an identified local environmental problem.
Xpeditions provides detailed directions for completing the lesson, suggestions for assessment and extension activities.
