http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=290
A lesson plan for grades 6–8 English Language Arts
This lesson introduces the GIST reading comprehension strategy that can be used in all content area subjects. The teacher introduces this lesson by modeling the GIST, which is a 20-word summary of an informational text, by using a high-interest newspaper article. Then students work in pairs to apply the GIST strategy to evaluate and summarize online newspaper articles. After students are familiar with the GIST summarizing strategy, they will practice and apply this reading comprehension strategy to content-area assignments. This lesson provides links to the GIST handout and several online newspaper websites.
